The school board of the new Gary Middle College (GMC), located at 724 WASHINGTON STREET in Gary is pleased to welcome community members, clergy, nonprofit colleagues, school counselors, members of the media and interested neighbors to an information session on April 26 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Join the group for refreshments, tours of the facility and a brief informational presentation on this innovative new school for the Gary community.

The principal of a new Gary charter school talked Thursday about what the school will offer to its students.

Gary Middle College, a public charter school, is designed for the nontraditional student who wants to earn a high school diploma. The new school is housed with sister school 21st Century Charter School, 556 Washington St., in Gary. Both are operated by Indianapolis-based GEO Foundation.

Gary Middle College will open Aug. 13 with 100 students, and operate between 5 and 9 p.m. after the school day ends at 21st Century Charter School. Flexible hours also will be offered Fridays and Saturdays. Child care will be available to students.

A dozen charter schools are operating in Northwest Indiana, with seven in Gary and one in Porter County. Two more are scheduled to open next year -- Heritage Institute of Arts and Technology, which wants to locate in Merrillville, and Gary Middle College.

Of the 14 applications the Office of Charter Schools at Ball State University has received, three are for Northwest Indiana. The new Indiana Charter School Board, which also can approve charter schools, has 15 applications, none for Northwest Indiana.

The Office of Charter Schools at Ball State University has approved an eighth charter school in the city.

The Gary Middle College, designed to serve the needs of nontraditional high school students, will open in fall 2011. It will be housed at 21st Century Charter School at Gary, 556 Washington St. The school will be in session from about 4 to 9 p.

Gary Middle College, run by the same company as 21st Century Charter School, will open next year as the city's eighth charter school. The Ball State University Office of Charter Schools authorized the school on Wednesday and granted a charter for five years. Public charter schools like Gary Middle College receive state funding but are afforded freedoms in curriculum and teaching styles.

The charter is designed as a night program and will serve students who find difficulty adhering to a traditional schedule.

NW TIMES: Community supports eighth Gary charter school

Dozens of people came out to support an eighth charter school in the city. The 21st Century Charter School, 556 Washington St. near downtown Gary, has a proposal before the Office of Charter Schools at Ball State University to open Gary Middle College next fall. The university hosted a public hearing Tuesday night.
