The school board of the new Gary Middle College (GMC), located at 724 WASHINGTON STREET in Gary is pleased to welcome community members, clergy, nonprofit colleagues, school counselors, members of the media and interested neighbors to an information session on April 26 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Join the group for refreshments, tours of the facility and a brief informational presentation on this innovative new school for the Gary community.
Gary Middle College, a tuition-free, public charter school, is slated to open on August 13, 2012. This unique high school aims to serve the needs of non-traditional high school students. The school will actually be in session in the evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and offer flexible scheduling on Fridays and Saturdays, but will serve students in grades 9-12 wishing to finish their high school degree and go to college.
“GMC offers a program that will fit the unique needs of students who may have experienced some obstacles to completing their education in a traditional program,” stated Principal James Joiner. “Individualized instruction plans, childcare options and academic coaching will be the keys we offer to support student success. Our students will not only attend high school, but will be able to participate in our Middle College program, and attend Ivy Tech classes for up to 60 hours of college credit, free of charge, as part of their academic program.” For the first year, the Gary Middle College program will be housed in the highly successful 21st Century Charter School @ Gary.
“Community leaders are welcomed and encouraged to learn more about this school that has so much potential to serve young people in our community who desire a high school diploma and college experience but need a flexible, more personalized approach,” stated Joiner.

Gary Middle College and the 21st Century Charter School @ Gary are free, public charter schools founded and supported by the Greater Educational Opportunities (GEO) Foundation. The schools are small, with a capacity of only about 100 and 300 students, respectively. However, the schools offer solid academics in an orderly and intimate environment.
GEO, located at 333 North Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis, believes that all children should have access to a quality education and embraces all quality educational options that enable parents to help their children learn and schools to succeed. As part of this commitment, GEO supports five charter schools — four in Indiana and one in Colorado — as part of its GEO Academies network.
